Welcome to Daejeon

Hong-chul Yum - Mayor of Daejeon Metropolitan CityMayor Hong-chul Yum’s Welcome Address

Dear INSME Members,

I am very pleased to invite you to the 8th INSME Annual Meeting under the theme of “Sustainable Growth with Innovation: Building Competitive SME Networks” to be held in Daejeon, Republic of Korea on May 22 - 25, 2012.

Geographically located in the center of the country, thus allowing for easy and accessible transportation, Daejeon is well known for a city of culture, art, and advanced technology that also provides the headquarters for national defense and administration.

In particular, Daejeon has the Daedeok Innopolis which is the first Special R&D Zone (Innovation Cluster) in Korea. Hosting about one thousand venture companies and about 70 national and private research institutes that are equipped with world-class infrastructure facilities and talented research experts, the Daedeok Innopolis has all the advantages of a synergistic exchange that utilizes hi-tech for industrial projects.

Being the second city for government administration, Daejeon offers many business cooperative programs and opportunities. For instance, the Small & Medium Business Administration, the Intellectual Property Office, and the Public Procurement Service are all based in Daejeon, which purport to support small and medium sized enterprises nationwide.

The World Technopolis Association (WTA), established in 1998 was an initiative led by Daejeon Metropolitan City.  Since its foundation, the association has further developed its reputation internationally, evident by the increased membership of up to 80 cities, universities, and research institutes from 40 countries in thirteen years. From this 8th INSME Annual Meeting, WTA expects to strengthen cooperation with the INSME.

The Annual Meeting is a unique opportunity that gathers many experts of the academia, industry and government bureaus, agents from small and medium enterprise agencies, and other famous leaders from around the world. There are also other concurrent events, such as the 9th WTA Daejeon High-tech Fair and the INNOBIZ Global Forum 2012 that these special guests may find interesting to attend.

Also this meeting will be a chance to learn and share future visions of small and medium sized enterprises and activate business exchanges.

I would be delighted if you would take part in the 8th INSME Annual Meeting to exchange different experiences from diverse sources. This will ensure a mutually beneficial event for all participants. I look forward to meeting you in Daejeon in May, 2012.

Thank you.

Hong-chul Yum
